SELLING ART

The secondary market’s prices are governed by supply and demand even more so than the primary market’s output. Our art consultants can advise you on this as well as the impact of other factors such as timing, convenience, region, condition and type of art.

Below are the typical options for selling art.

Private Sales

Due to the frustration many sellers have much higher commission rates at auctions and long lead times, private sales are becoming increasingly popular. There is no doubt that the fewer transactions between parties, the better off you will be. Proper negotiation skills and precautions to ensure payment are essential in our team.

Selling art privately requires the investor to ensure that the artwork being sold is properly appraised. Farhi Fine Art consultants can assist with this process and can also market your artwork to suitable investors or collectors on your behalf.  We have superb relationships with many high-profile international collectors who will often contact us when they are looking to release equity or simply enhance their portfolios.

Auction Houses

Blue-chip or established artists, whose works have a large, well-established secondary  market,  are ideal candidates for this approach. However, the fees associated with sending a piece to an auction need to be considered. It is not uncommon for leading auction houses to charge up to 25% of the hammer price.

Galleries

The primary market is where galleries typically operate, but they also have a stake in the secondary market. Galleries often have an inventory of artworks that are being resold, especially if they have a high stake in a particular artist. To maintain high demand, a gallery might be interested in acquiring a piece from your collection. It is in their interest to control the demand of the artists in their sphere of influence without flooding the market.

Farhi Fine Art enjoys strong relationships with several prestigious galleries around the world. Should you wish, we can work with you to identify those galleries that are likely to have an interest in your artwork.

Information required when submitting your artwork

When submitting your artwork, please provide us with as much written information as possible. This will include the artist’s name, whether the artwork is an original or a print, the medium, the date of purchase, the price paid for the artwork and all available history (provenance).
